Just a couple of hours away, the thick forests, peaceful lake and mountains of Big Bear are just the things to bring calmness into your life. Put on your skiis and start adventuring down the slopes! After flying down the different slopes, the perfect hot chocolate is waiting for you in the ski lodge. Once you’ve had enough of skiing for the day, drive down to Big Bear Lake and enjoy a walk in the wild, followed by a stroll in downtown. But this is not the typical downtown area- the quaint nature of the fun gift shops and unique restaurants remind you that you are far from the city. End the day with a glass of red wine and get cozy by the fire.

Santa Barbara

The most adorable town in Southern California! It’s not a wonder why people seem so happy here- from the deep blue beach in the front, protected by the magical mountains in the back, Santa Barbara has it all. Just a twenty minute drive from downtown, you have access to to waterfall hikes, Tangerine Falls and Seven Falls. Tangerine Falls is a great reminder of the importance of spending time in nature. It is a truly remarkable hike where all stress simply disappears. On the other hand, Seven Falls is a hike for someone who likes a little challenge- including having to do some jumping around on the rocks. But the challenge is worth every step once you reach the incredible view! Another fun fact Santa Barbara is a mini Napa, filled with a handful of vineyards just a 30 minute drive away in Santa Ynez! But if you want to stay close, definitely take a stop at Func Zone, where many of the tasting rooms are gathered together with cool art & vintage shops. Finally, you can’t forget to visit Butterfly Beach in Montecito, accompanied by dinner at one of the many seafood restaurants located on the Santa Barbara Pierre.

Ojai

Have you ever reflected over your way of breathing or how it can affect your emotions? Often, we take breathing for granted, and don’t explore out of our comfort zones. Ojai is the perfect place to connect body and mind. Check in to one of Ojai’s yoga & meditation retreats where the real magic happens. Another must do is to take a guided tour and tasting at the Ojai Olive Oil Company farm. After you find the right oil for you, pop on over and take a  tour of the Ojai Farmers Market or the Museum of History and Art! There’s no lack of amazing culinary options here, either. Experience a food heaven at the Ojai Deer Lodge and order one of their famous handcrafted cocktails. There are no better ways to de-stress than combining the best pieces of yoga, farms, art, and food into one melting pot. Namaste!

Malibu

Love, beach, and HORSES! Horses are known for their restorative powers in bringing pure joy and happiness. There are several great ranches around Malibu, and you also have the choice to ride along the gorgeous beach, or other scenic trails near fields, rivers and mountains. Continue the day and keep in tune with the ranch theme by stopping at The Old Place, a restaurant with a truly authentic western vibe. Here you’ll enjoy food prepared the old school way-  over the fire! Malibu is another California beach paradise, so you definitely can’t leave without a complete visit to the beach. Bring your favorite sunglasses, stop by an ice cream shop and unplug for a couple of hours  near the shore. Catch the sunset on the famous Malibu pier with relaxing view over the Pacific Ocean.

January is Blood Donation Awareness Month

It is the beginning of the New Year, and what better way to start off on a positive note then to save a life in your community! Since 1970, January has been recognized as National Blood Donor Month. While many are still recovering from their holiday coma and/or in many places around the country the weather isn’t permitting, January has seen a lower percentage of donations. It only takes 1% of a nation’s population to hit the required blood needed of the area. To keep the motivation alive, let’s all do our part in helping save lives by donating or even just spreading the word so that others may donate!

Why it’s important to donate blood, how you could save a life

In order for hospitals to keep up with growing demands for cancer care, surgeries, traumas and other treatments about 44,000 donations are needed every day. When donating, only a pint can be taken from a healthy donor, and at most twenty-four donations a year are allowed per individual so not to harm the body. When appropriate tests are done to ensure blood is safe for transfer the blood can simply be stored for 42 days. These limitations make it difficult to mass produce and store for populations in need. The most required blood type is the one that is not on the shelf of the hospital deprived.

Differences in blood types and what that means for you

There are four different types of blood cells: A, B, AB, and O. Our blood contains different antigens and antibodies that make up our blood cells, and each one needs the correct amount to be healthy and used appropriately in each form “In addition to the A and B antigens, there is a third antigen called the Rh factor, which can be either present (+) or absent (-). In general, Rh negative blood is given to Rh-negative patients, and Rh positive blood or Rh negative blood may be given to Rh positive patients.”

Blood type is inherited based on what our parents have given us. The AB blood types are the universal recipient and O blood types are the universal donor for all blood types. When combining the wrong blood types together it can be very harmful to the body. People with O blood types are more sought after because they are able to be used to help anyone! No matter your blood type, yours could help save a life – get started today!

The Essential Packing Guide For Travel Nurses

Heading off on your next assignment? We know you’re eager to head off to your new destination, but after all the paperwork and interviews are finished – all that stands between you and your new adventure is the challenge of packing up the essentials!

While it sounds simple enough, it can be a challenge determining the most important items to take with you. Make the journey a little easier with this helpful packing guide!

A dependable watch

Taking a pulse with a watch that has a second hand is a huge part of the job. Make sure you have a watch that’s high quality, meaning it’s easy to read and holds up to the demands of the job like frequent hand washing.

Comfy shoes

Make those 12-hour shifts a little bit easier with supportive shoes. With good arch support, a dependable pair of shoes that you can spend all day on goes a long way. You’ll end up so happy that you invested in great footwear – you’ll be spending hours and hours on your feet, after all!

Lap top or computer

Whether you’re doing research on the job, keeping in touch with loved ones or just want to stream Netflix for some entertainment in your off hours – a computer can be a valuable tool. It can also double as a DVD player or to rent movies!

A sturdy stethoscope

An essential item to pack on your travels, a stethoscope is an important tool for any nurse! Have your own, high quality stethoscope handy for whatever the situation calls for. It might even be a good idea to have a few – working in a new hospital could cause you to forget a thing or two the first few times you’re running out the door!

An electronic reader

If you’re sick of streaming movies or can’t find a new show to marathon, take up reading! Whether it’s a Kindle or Nook, having one of these readers handy allows you to keep up on your reading without carrying the clutter of new books.

Bedding

Even if you’ll be staying in a furnished apartment, having your own bedding – even just a thick mattress pad – can make catching those ZZZ’s much easier. Research any household items you might need to bring to your housing unit like cookware or linens as well!

Life on the road is daunting, but with these must-haves you can make your trip a breeze – and a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
