6 Ways To Be Proactive & Get Involved With Breast Cancer Awareness

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month – this month is about turning awareness into action, getting involved in the education of this disease, and living a healthy, positive lifestyle to reduce the risks of developing breast cancer!

Nearly everybody knows someone touched by this disease. The good news is that treatments keep getting more advanced, and now we know more than ever how to best prevent breast cancer. Want to improve your health and make an impact? Check out these six ways to get more involved during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Volunteer Your Time

While money is a crucial part of funding research for finding a cure, it’s also important to donate your time. There are several different charities seeking an extra hand in making a difference in the lives of those dealing with breast cancer. You can go the distance in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer with American Cancer Society! Be part of your local 3-to-5 mile event by signing up to be a walker or volunteer. Not a big fan of running? Become an Advocate For Hope with National Breast Cancer Foundation! Spread the message of early detection and encourage others to do so as well.

Say It On Social Media

Social Media is a great way to spread awareness! Send your female – and male – friends and family an e-card, tweet, or Facebook message from the Department of Health and Human Services as a caring reminder to ask their doctor about mammograms.

It might sound silly, but simply sharing articles, pictures or even hashtagging the trending #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth on your social media channels can help to alert others to learn more on prevention and stats surrounding breast cancer. You never know who you might help!

Find Out Your Family History

I know, you’ve been telling yourself you’re going to look into your family history… next year. This month is the perfect time to take special steps to protect your health! You may have a high risk of breast cancer if you have a sister or mother who developed breast or ovarian cancer – especially at an early age – or if you have multiple family members who developed breast, prostate, or ovarian cancer. Ask your doctor or genetic counselor so you can better understand your family history of breast cancer!

Make Time For A Mammogram

Studies have shown that a breast cancer screening with mammography saves lives. While it doesn’t help to prevent cancer, it can detect it early or when it’s most treatable. On average, a regular mammogram for women can begin at age 40, but it varies by age and risk. Make sure to get regular mammograms, whether or not breast cancer runs in your family!

Shop For Your Skin

We all love to shop – make it for a good cause! Skincare brands such as Clinique promotes a donation with purchase of specific products. Eos also has products where a portion of the proceeds will benefit breast cancer research! Help your skin look its best and raise awareness.

Get Informed

This year, around 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. Read up on your research, stay informed for you – and your loved ones – health.

Did you know men are also at risk? All people, regardless of male or female, are born with some breast cells and tissue. A man’s breast cells can still develop cancer and while it is rare, it still presents a risk. Awareness among men is spread much less, so they are less likely to assume a lump is breast cancer, which can cause a delay in seeking treatment.

Whatever you decide to do this month surrounding breast cancer awareness, your efforts make a difference. So many people have been affected by breast cancer, whether it’s personally or watching loved ones suffer. Let’s increase awareness about early detection, research and support this National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and everyday! Together we can be the change!

Happy National Boss Day – You rock Joe and Kris!

It’s National Boss Day, and we feel like it’s safe to say… the KPG Healthcare family has the best bosses out there! We wanted to take some time to tell you both just how much we appreciate everything you do. The KPG team has voted, and it’s official we’re lucky to be able to call Kris and Joe our fearless leaders!

Mayra: I love how comfortable they make you feel even though they are the big scary CEO’s . I really appreciate the friendliness that they provide and lead by example.  I love them

PabloJoe and Kris have always been extremely supportive in all aspects and I really appreciate their “open door” policy when needing to talk about day to day business operations, challenges, strategies, etc. Happy National Boss’s Day!

Matt: Kris and Joe always say Hi in the morning, they ask what you’re up to outside of work and what’s going on this weekend etc. Always relatable on a person – to – person level. Their door is open for anything. They are far from disconnected. Good dudes all around!

Liberty: “Don’t pick a job. Pick a Boss. Your first boss is the biggest factor in your career success. A boss who doesn’t trust you won’t give you opportunities to grow.” – William Raduchel

Emerson: Love their positive energy!

Mike: I love working for two Rock Stars.  They lead us down ‘Thunder Road’ and thru the ‘Badlands’… ‘Racing in the Street’ to the ‘Land of Hope and Dreams’. Whether we’re ‘Dancing in the Dark’ or on a ‘Long Walk Home’ – Joe & Kris remind of us of our ‘Hungry Heart’, our ‘Human Touch’, and that we’re ‘Tougher Than the Rest’.

Wealthy: I love working for Joe because he is so clean and organized.  And I love working for Kris because he always wants to know what’s going on for the upcoming weekend! =)

Natasha: Always upbeat attitude. Always encouraging and interested in what EVERYONE has going on… just great people/energy overall love them!

Leti: One thing I love about working for Kris and Joe is that they go above and beyond to create an atmosphere where everyone feels safe to ask for help and make work fun! I really do feel lucky to work for great people like Kris and Joe!

Kristi Parrales: I love the fist pumps from Kris every morning and the warm smile from Joe when he comes to our cubicles to check in. Joe is really great at team meetings. I’m always excited to hear what news he has to share.

Hanna: They are open and available to help everyone! Their door is literally always open and they have an approachable vibe where they aren’t an “intimidating boss”. I appreciate that!

Kristi Palombo: They always put the team first!

Jan: I love the youth and humor they bring to the office. I love that the drive and determination at a young age is a good story to tell my boys.

Sean: They are always in a good mood and are approachable in the office. Plus they always take time to talk to us and crack jokes!

Becca: They create a positive work environment that promotes communication, recognition, success and a good work life balance.

Bern: Their approachability, positive energy, upbeat attitudes and passion for employees to succeed makes them amazing bosses!

Tiko: I love the fact that Kris and Joe are very approachable and always have their office open/have time to give some great advice or even chat regarding just about anything.

Patrick: The best part about working with Kris and Joe is the great workplace environment they have created. They have done an awesome job keeping the office fun and motivated. Also, the snacks are pretty sweet too!

Gladis: I like working with Joe & Kris because of their upbeat, positive & fun personalities. It sets the atmosphere for the entire company and at least for me makes coming to work a little less work. They encourage hard work without forgetting to make it fun & enjoyable to be here.

Zach – Both Joe and Kris have done an excellent jump creating a phenomenal work culture.  I’ve always appreciated how they’ve included everyone within the company their vision, motivating everyone to work as hard as possible to be successful.

Cassie: I love working with Kris and Joe because they make it comfortable. We still have fun in a relaxed environment, while still working our bootys off.

Veronica: They have an open door policy – come in with concerns, requests, jokes, the latest sports news, etc.! They are genuine all around guys!

Mark: The main reason I love Joe and Kris is as follows: when we were all at the beach a few months ago and my dad went too far out (he cannot swim) he was in danger of drowning. Not even the lifeguards were willing to swim out to his rescue since there were several sharks surrounding him and I was sure that this was the end for my aquatically challenged father. Just as I was about to call the Los Angeles court house to put myself up for adoption, I noticed my two bosses Joe and Kris already halfway to his location. The speed they were swimming at was uncanny, it was if they had found a way to use their arms as clean energy/ non-smog inducing motors. After what felt like hours, they emerged on to the shoreline, Joe carrying my dad and Kris clearing the crowd of bystanders who weren’t righteous enough to accomplish what they just had. I’ll never forget the look in Joe’s eyes when he was checking my dad’s pulse. Focused and without fear. And I’ll never forget the emotion in Kris’ voice as he pounded his fists on my dad’s chest screaming, “Not today you bastard… you aren’t dying today… not while Joe and I are here!”/ I almost collapsed in relief when my dad finally took a deep revived breath. He was saved. I was helpless that day- But Joe and Kris were there to show the courage I couldn’t. I offered to buy them ice cream but by the time I returned with it, they were already riding jet skis into the coastline sunset (The jet skis had really cool custom paintjobs that looked like fire). They are great bosses to work for.

Lisa: I would say one thing I enjoy about Joe and Kris as a boss is the incredible generosity they show all of us. Before my first day Joe invited me to a Kings game because he had a suite and the whole crew was going and he wanted me to feel like part of the family. I found that to be special considering I hadn’t even started yet. Whether it’s a raffle to win Dodger tickets or a room for us to not drive home after an awesome Christmas party or Joe’s delicious salsa we always feel taken care of.  Thanks Kris and Joe!!! Happy bosses appreciation day.

Chris: I love that when I have questions, concerns, or life interactions I can go to them and know they’ll give me realistic conversations/interactions they have had to help make me a better recruiter/person.

Meghan: The only way to do great at work is to have great people to work with.  Kris and Joe have created a work environment that together we achieve more. There is teamwork, respect, motivation, honesty, laughter, friendship and more.  Kris and Joe make a point to be involved everyday with everyone and that speaks volumes, whether it is a high five, fist bump or a smile.

Ruthie: I Love working with Joe and Kris because they’re young and hip which makes them fun and down to earth. I Love how understanding they can be with everyone and how for holiday weekends they allow us to leave early the Friday before, which shows me they really care about us and value our time with our family. They’re considerate

Kimmy: I really enjoy the atmosphere here at KPG, we are like a family that has their ups and downs but always finds a way to get ahead. Joe and Kris have a busy schedule but always have time to pick up their head to say hi or go around to see how everyone’s weekend was. I feel really privileged to be part of KPG and want to thank our amazing bosses for letting me be a part of their success. May God Bless you and the team! KPG Rocks

Belen: I truly appreciate that Joe and Kris are always approachable and friendly.  They take time to always say hi and check to see how everyone is doing. Not only with regards to work but on a personal level showing that they care about their Team.

Mark: Joe and Kris make it a point to encourage your individuality. You don’t go in working for them and come out a robot- You come out as your best self, motivated and confident. It’s great knowing they have my back.

Peter: Having a boss that loves the Lions as much as I do!

Hana: The one thing I love about working with Kris and Joe is how charismatic they both are! Their upbeat, fun and passionate personalities are contagious and truly inspire me to strive for success.

Liza: The reason why I like working with Kris and Joe is because they are great Bosses. They treat everyone the same and they listen and get to know the people they are managing, they value their time and employee time. They let their employees know where they stand, they become personal mentors by listening and maintaining a positive attitude.

Chad – Joe: His optimistic, caring, loyal and trusting personality. Kris: His uncanny ability to let things roll off his shoulders, his knack at building relationships, and his strong attention to detail.

Clarissa I love their generosity and their understanding of the work/life balance.

“Leadership is not about a title or a designation. It’s about impact, influence and inspiration. Impact involves getting results, influence is about spreading the passion you have for your work, and you have to inspire team-mates and customers.” – Robin Sharma

Emergency Nurses Week: Honoring our ER Nurses

Nursing is a difficult career, and becoming an Emergency Room Nurse requires an incredible amount of strength, compassion and resilience. For ER Nurses Week from October 8th through the 14th, we are dedicated to recognizing the talented individuals who see it all. From splinters to trauma, ER nurses never know what will come through their doors. Whether it’s a young boy with an impacted splinter, or the devastation of a gunshot wound, these nurses step up to the plate no matter the situation!

We’ve decided to showcase a few KPG Emergency Room Nurses in Honor of ER Nurses Week! These amazing individuals truly embody the spirit and compassion of a nurse and we are so proud to say THANKS to them today!

Clare C. – ER RN

Why did you choose ER as your specialty?

One of the reasons I enjoy emergency medicine is because I like change. The variety and complexity of cases in the department is a continuum of change in the study of health and human science.  Most emergency departments appear unorganized. However, there is an underlying structure in all units. Being a methodic, organized individual helps to keep me calm when situations seem chaotic.

What was your favorite moment on the floor?

Memorable moments on the floor are when I can make a difference in an older adult’s care. This vulnerable population requires extra time, patience, and education each time they come into contact with healthcare providers. For them, it is often the little things such as sitting with them to talk or speaking with a concerned out of state relative on the phone.

Why do you enjoy working for KPG?

Janice is one of the reasons I am with KPG. We stumbled upon each other, and it has worked out perfectly. Janice is responsive, attentive, and she knows and wants to continue to learn the travel business. She is an asset in my current travel nurse life!

Amanda V. – ER RN

Why did you choose ER as your specialty?

I chose ER as my specialty because I enjoy the fast paced and unpredictable environment. Also, people of the ER are a different breed, which I feel I fit in well and work the best with. Everyone works as a team and makes every day the best day!

What was your favorite moment on the floor?

My favorite moment on the floor was when we had a pediatric resuscitation and everyone came together and worked so well together. The circumstances were horrific but each person displayed so much emotion yet able to do their job proficiently – the rawness of the nurses, doctors, and entire team made it my favorite experience.

Why do you enjoy working for KPG?

I enjoy KPG because of my recruiter, Janice! She’s the best!

This week take a minute to thank the people who save countless lives every shift – ER Nurses! KPG Healthcare is proud to staff some of the best Emergency Rooms in the Nation.
